Another summer camp season is in the books and the transition back to school will begin next month. What a wonderful summer – being immersed in nature, exploring new places, making new friends, and trying new things. This year’s camp ended with an eye toward the future and the excitement that lies ahead. Most importantly, the children took a moment and reflected to consider the joys and triumphs of the past 2 weeks. Their hearts were full of gratitude for the facilitators, who had bestowed the skills into their eager hands.
The campers showed up every morning with a zest for life. They were open to trying new things, were always engaged, and appreciated the many gifts that nature has to offer. Because of their days spent at Kuns Kamp, they have acquired an increase in confidence, a deeper connection to nature, and a greater sense of their own independence.
The wonderful thing about Kuns Kamp is that it is more than just a place to spend summer days. It is an experience that becomes a part of who each child is – it is learning and growing, having the strength and courage to stretch and be flexible and explore the world. When the children played field games at camp, they weren’t only building their athletic prowess – they were also learning to be good sportsters and team players. When they tried brand new activities like gardening and theatre, they not only learnt to take a step out of their comfort zone but also built up their reserves of confidence and resolve, so that when they once again find themselves in a new and overwhelming situation, they’ll remember that they are brave enough to take that first step. When they spent an entire night in the camp, looking for the stars and noticing the different constellations in the cloudy sky, they strengthened a connection to nature that will stay with them all their lives and, hopefully, instil in them a love for the outdoors and a commitment to preserving and protecting the environment. Alongside their facilitators and new friends, they celebrated their successes and learnt from their mistakes.
As the days ahead grow hotter and the leaves begin to change, we hope for each of our campers that they will not only remember their experiences with fondness but will build upon them, continuing to take charge and go for it, learn from mistakes, set goals and pursue them, and enjoy the company of new acquaintances.
What a wonderful summer! A big shout out to everyone for being an important part of it. We can’t wait to have you back again next year.
Here is a glimpse of what the children learnt during the second week.
