Primary Years Programme at Kunskapsskolan Gurgaon

The PYP offers an inquiry-based, transdisciplinary curriculum framework that builds conceptual understanding. It is a student-centered approach to education for children aged 3-12. It reflects the best of educational research, thought leadership and experience derived from IB World Schools.

The PYP focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in school and in the world beyond. The PYP offers a transformative experience for students, teachers and whole school communities and delivers excellent outcomes by providing an education that is engaging, relevant, challenging and significant.

PYP learners know how to take ownership of their learning, collaborating with teachers to deepen understanding and increase their confidence and self-motivation. Through actively engaging in integrated ongoing assessment they become effective, self-regulated learners who can act on constructive feedback.

Guided by six transdisciplinary themes of global significance, students broaden their learning by developing their conceptual understandings, strengthening their knowledge and skills across, between and beyond subject areas. The PYP framework is built around four core elements: Knowledge, Concepts, Skills, and Action.

The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) utilizes six transdisciplinary themes to frame inquiry-based learning for students aged 3-12, transcending traditional subject boundaries to explore big ideas. These themes focus on personal, local, and global issues, guiding students to connect knowledge and take action.

  • Who we are
  • Where we are in place and time
  • How we express ourselves
  • How the world works
  • How we organize ourselves
  • Sharing the planet

PYP transdisciplinary themes are at the heart of the IB Primary Years Program, offering young learners a powerful framework for inquiry, understanding, and growth. These themes bring coherence to the curriculum, guiding students through rich, meaningful explorations that connect knowledge across disciplines. By fostering curiosity, promoting global awareness, and encouraging thoughtful action, PYP inquiry themes prepare children to navigate an increasingly complex world with confidence and compassion.

The PYP identifies seven specified concepts that guide inquiry and promote deep thinking:

  • Form: What is it like?
  • Function: How does it work?
  • Causation: Why is it the way it is?
  • Change: How is it changing?
  • Connection: How is it connected to other things?
  • Perspective: What are the points of view?
  • Responsibility: What is our responsibility?

These skills help students "learn how to learn" through five main categories:

  • Thinking skills: Analyzing and problem solving.
  • Communication skills: Expressing and listening.
  • Social skills: Collaborating and respecting.
  • Self-management skills: Organization and reflection.
  • Research skills: Gathering and interpreting data.

Action, the core of student agency, is integral to the PYP learning process and to the programme’s overarching outcome of international mindedness. Through taking individual and collective action, students come to understand the responsibilities associated with being internationally-minded and to appreciate the benefits of working with others for a shared purpose.
