Countries have introduced educational reforms that have swung open the doors for school choice, competition, innovation and the renewal of primary and secondary education. As a result, Kunskapsskolan was founded in Sweden in 1999 and opened its first schools in 2000. The idea was to collect the very best practices from pedagogy, technology, school design and process management to integrate them together into a coherent model of personalized education for the new century.
Bits and pieces of this had been done before. But it was executed by teachers trying to personalise within their isolated classrooms and by schools struggling within one-size-fits-all education. Never before had anyone had the long-term perspective and ambition to invest in a coherent development where pedagogy, accountability, IT technology, administration, teachers´ resources and school design are all designed with one common purpose: to
create a school centered on the recognition of each unique individual.
Kunskapsskolan opened one of its first schools in Tyresö, south of Stockholm, Sweden, in year 2000. Commentators described it as “the first school for the new century”
Today, after more than 10 years of continuous development and more than 30 schools, the result is the internationally-acclaimed KED program.
KED attracts attention both for its consistent and coherent approach and its advanced use of information technology. But most of all, KED is recognized for its academic achievement and its ability to empower students with the knowledge and the capacity to meet the complex demands of a modern society as responsible individuals and team members.
Kunskapsskolan continues to develop the program;continuous improvement, based on practical experiences from all schools, is a core element of our philosophy, as seen in our performance management system; Kunskapsskolan’s schools measure their performance in four dimensions:
All the data we collect provides the basis for further development of methodology and processes.
As a result of the large interest in Kunskapsskolan’s achievements and methodology from United Kingdom authorities and professionals, Kunskapsskolan decided to establish a UK operation and adapt its concept to the UK language and curriculum in 2007. Shortly after, Kunskapsskolan was chosen as a partner and sponsor in the Academies program. Through the Learning Schools Trust, UK Academies will be run according to Kunskapsskolan’s KED program, but within the UK curriculum, regulations and educational environment. This adaptation and development is being carried out in co-operation with local teachers and Kunskapsskolan’s pedagogical and organizational experts.
Kunskapsskolan USA provides the KED program and educational management services to public, private and charter schools in the US. KED inspired : The Great Oaks Foundation (GO) and Kunskapsskolan Education (KED) have established a partnership to provide an innovative methodology, including its online curriculum, to the students who will be attending of Great Oaks Charter School in New York City.
Kunskapsskolan Eduventures opened its first KED school in Gurgaon in 2013. The school currently operates all grades from per-primary level up to grade 12. KED’s presence in India is expanding rapidly; there are currently four KED schools in India; two are in Gurgaon, one in Lucknow and one in Bengaluru.
With its strong track record and world-acclaimed approach, Kunskapsskolan’s ambition is to continue to open new schools and provide its expertise, services and solutions for high performing education to existing schools around the world. It is also our conviction that sharing experiences across languages and borders and linking educators and students together in a global network will provide better education while it promotes global understanding and insights.
Birgitta Ericsson and her team were experienced teachers who had been working with methods for personalizing education within the framework of the conventional school when Kunskapsskolan offered them an opportunity to develop a comprehensive and long term program for a modern school.
Today, Birgitta heads Kunskapsskolans pedagogical development team that involves all our teachers’ contributions and experiences. Continuous, evidence-based improvements is still the philosophy.

A typical day at Kunskapsskolan School is exciting and challenging. At Kunskapsskolan School, students start their day with their base group and coach. The base group session begins with listening to and observing the daily news. This is followed by guidelines from the teacher to help students create their own personal time plan which ensures optimal utilization of time to achieve students’ personal and academic goals.
During the day students attend diverse teaching learning sessions such as workshops, lectures, seminars, communication sessions and lab sessions. Each of these sessions is aimed at supporting and mentoring students. While some sessions such as the lectures, lab sessions and seminars are largely teacher directed, workshops and communication sessions are guided by the needs of the students. Workshops are sessions wherein students receive targeted help from subject teachers. The student get individual or group help on starting a course or learning skills.
The lab sessions are interactive sessions providing students opportunity to explore and apply their learning in real life situations. Communication sessions held regularly help to enhance the ability of students to express with clarity, develop listening and comprehension skills and vocabulary.
These academic sessions are interspersed with co curricular sessions such as art, music, dance and diverse sports, providing the environment for holistic development of the student.
Kunskapsskolan is a global school where students will develop in an environment that nurtures them and their uniqueness. Exposure to the varied curriculums of Kunskapsskolan schools across the continents will provide the students with an enhanced and holistic view of the world they inhabit. The subjects and concepts taught at the various grades are aligned to the CBSE curriculum.
In Kunskapsskolan, all the subjects are organized in Steps and Themes. This challenges students to stretch their boundaries, construct a solid foundation of knowledge and skills.
Subjects that are required to be learnt sequentially and progressively are taught in steps. Math and languages are step subjects. The student moves from one step to the next, once he has mastered the previous requisite step. The students understanding of the concept is assessed through presentations and projects.
The thematic courses integrate subjects. EVS, Arts and Computers are theme courses and organized around projects and missions (assignments). They are solved or carried out by using and applying what the student has learned and demonstrate the ability to use logical thinking and creativity to solve problems.
At preschool the focus is on the different skills that children develop at this age group. The curriculum is theme based with emphasis on developing the language, numeracy, cognitive, socio emotional and motor skills. The learning will be fun filled, activity based and learner centered, strongly influenced by an understanding of early childhood learning.
